Evonik in Russia

Evonik and its predecessor company, Degussa, have a long tradition in Russia and the CIS countries: It started as a fertilizer supplier in 1918 and is now a major company in the region. Russia is one of the most important markets for Evonik in Eastern Europe, as measured by sales.

Evonik is represented in Russia and the CIS countries by Evonik Chimia, which focuses on the promising energy and specialty chemicals markets. The 2004 commissioning of a production facility for PLEXIGLAS® sheets in Poldolsk, a city about 40 kilometers south of Moscow, was a key factor contributing to growth. At this facility’s technical service center, Evonik also gives its customers expert advice, showing them how to use its products optimally. The year 2007 was marked by the opening in Podolsk of a filling line for skin-care products, a particularly high-growth business. After STOKO® products were introduced on the Russian market in 2000, companies such as Gazprom, Russian Railways, LUKOIL, and TNK-BP began using them regularly.

Other activities in Russia include producing hydrogen peroxide and strengthening our lubricant additives activities in the oil industry. In our Energy Business Area, we focus our expertise in Russia on utilizing mine gas.

Innovation is a key

Because of the high caliber of its scientists, Russia has special priority when it comes to strengthening our network of contacts with universities. Last year, we intensified our long-standing relationship with Lomonossov University and its top-class research by providing funding for research projects. We also cooperate with research scientists in St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk. German and Russian scientists are working on the development of new catalytic systems and conducting investigations in organic synthesis, biotechnologies, and process technologies.
